This book has been produced in bits and pieces over time, but in truth it is California’s shelter in place order that brought it to the forefront for me.
I spent Beltane inside and I was missing the camaraderie and fun that is traditional for my friends, a weekend where we all gather to camp and enjoy each other. I do this each year because I belong to a club of sorts with people of all faiths and beliefs. We gather for our celebration of spring which is both our custom and tradition.
I am a member of the SCA (the Society for Creative Anachronism). Though the group has no religious affiliation, there is a Beltane event.
It has become one of my favorite camping events of the year. An event almost entirely dedicated to feasting, drinking and visiting with friends. In the evening beneath the mighty oaks, whose lacy branches adorn the moon-glade night, we gather for a bardic competition with poetry and music by firelight. My first weekend of Spring has been spent this way for many a year. These memories inspired this coloring book.
You do not have to be Pagan to revel in nature, to respect her power or wonder at her endless glories, nor must you be Pagan to take heart in the company of good friends. I must acknowledge that Beltane has its root firmly planted in the Pagan world. I have used images that relate specifically to that belief system.
Here in honor of my friends and fellow members of the SCA, in honor of the Pagans whose holiday this is, to all who have been and still are believers. For those who celebrate Nature and the coming of Spring, which in turn heralds the Summer. For all of us, and all of you, I have made this book.
I hope you enjoy the art. Find it both soothing to color and pleasant to look at.
Thank you again for choosing it.
